Vacation is supposed to be you time: a time to relax, recuperate and recharge with family and friends. A trip to Bali can be one of the best times of your life but nothing ruins a vacation like an unexpected illness. You can't always control when you get sick, but here are a few ways to beat your summer cold and enjoy your time off!


Prepare Beforehand

Don't run yourself ragged before a vacation; instead you should do everything you can to stay as healthy as possible right up to your departure date. A beach bod is useless if you're too sick to go to the beach. Watch what you eat, get plenty of rest, and it might be a good idea to take some supplements like greens powder or an immune boosting supplement to make sure that you don't end up sick right before you're due to leave. It's always better to err on the side of over-caution and be a little paranoid before you leave instead of ending up sick after you arrive.


Take Precautions

It's especially important to take precautions while you're traveling. Especially on a long flight to somewhere like Indonesia, you're going to be exposed to a lot of germs in a lot of airports along the way. Reduce your exposure with masks, hand washing and hand sanitizer. These simple defenses can go a long way towards keeping you healthy.

Wearing a mask in the airport is actually quite common in many countries, and it's probably a good precaution to take. Also, you can find Vitamin C supplements in most airports and add them to your water bottle. Make sure to stay hydrated, try to get plenty of sleep and remember when you're booking your flight that the fewer layovers you have, the fewer germs you will be exposed to!


Get Sleep

Getting sleep isn't just important before you travel or while you're on a long-haul flight, it's also important while you're vacationing. Sleep is vitally important to your body's immune and other systems. It's tempting to stay up late every night and get the most out of your trip, but taxing your body with lack of sleep can have disastrous consequences.


Eat Well

You also need to be careful that you're eating enough, but not too much. Remember, not all illnesses are airborne. You do want to try local cuisine, but you definitely don't want to end up with food poisoning, so make sure that you're eating well, and from reputable restaurants. You should also take care to stay hydrated, especially if you're spending a lot of time out in the sun. Your body needs lots of water, and soaking yourself in seawater or pool water won't cut it. If you do end up sick, then making sure that you're hydrated and getting all the nutrients you need becomes more important than ever.


Don't Overdo It

Obviously you want to get the most out of your vacation. You can try to do everything, but the more you try to do the more you stress your body's systems, and the more likely you are to end up sick. Pace yourself, make sure you're taking care of yourself, and try not to overdo it, no matter how tempting it is to try. Remember, if you overdo it now and end up getting sick, you won't be able to do anything at all, but if you pace yourself and you're realistic about your limitations, you will probably end up doing more of the things you really wanted to do in the first place.


There's nothing that can give you a 100% guarantee of 100% wellness. Everyone will have a vacation ruined by a cold at least once in their lives. It helps to know you did the best you could to avoid it, but if you do end up sick on vacation, go easy on yourself. Get plenty of rest, do everything you can to get better as quickly as possible.
